Internship Opportunity
The Virginia Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (VA-SBIRT) project has integrated SBIRT process into the clinical practice and electronic health records of multiple primary care and community health care settings in northern Virginia and Shenandoah Valley regions to address risky and problematic substance use & depression. Our goal is to increase access to universal screening, secondary prevention, early intervention and treatment for people engaging in substance misuse or abuse by implementing SBIRT. We are looking for an undergraduate psychology student who would like to gain hands-on experience at Prince William Health Department’s clinics in Manassas and Woodbridge. The Manassas clinic can utilize someone on Wednesdaysand Woodbridge clinic on Fridays for one full day each week. We will provide all required trainings. Students will be expected to perform the following activities. • Coordinate with front office staff to monitor patients that qualify for SBIRT screening. • Prepare and handout tablets to patients and discuss the rationale behind screening. • Collect completed surveys, review results, and pass it on to clinician for further intervention. • Opportunity to observe Brief Intervention (BI) for substance abuse and/or depression • Possibility of receiving training on conducting BI and then practicing skills under supervision If interested and would like more information please contact Sonia Rehman, SBIRT practice coordinator, at[email protected]. We are currently accepting applications for an internship opportunity with at the Institute for National Strategic Studies at the National Defense University at Fort McNair in DC for the Spring and Summer of 2018. Dr. Bowles, a clinical psychologist and former Colonel in the Army, will be providing mentorship through the non-paid internship. Interviews for the Spring semester will be conducted the week of 11-15 December. Intern National Defense University, Internship applications of highly motivated undergraduate and graduate psychology students and interested graduate students are currently being accepted for the Institute for National Strategic Studies at the National Defense University. If accepted, students will be members of the Leadership Fitness Lab and work with Dr. (COL Ret.) Stephen Bowles on various topics including: * Emotional Intelligence, Personality and Performance * Military Couples Resilience, PTSD * Leadership * Yoga, Resilience, and Dreams * Psychological Healthy Workplace * Well-being Responsibilities include: * Literature reviews, power point presentations, posters, manuscript editing and writing * Preparing publication submissions * Coordination of articles with co-authors * Organizing of literature review, manuscripts and other relevant research material * Data base entry/management/data analysis Hours preferred: * 12-16 hours per week during school year * 36 hours per week during summer This can be flexible depending on class and work schedules. Western Kentucky University is hosting a Summer 2017 National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program in psychology. The theme of the program is Advancing Psychological Research with Technology. Through this program, 8 undergraduate students will complete a 10-week internship, where they will work closely with a faculty mentor on one or more research projects. Students will also participate in developmental workshops and activities related to topics such as ethics, research methods, statistics, computer software, and presentation skills.
Program participants will receive a $5,000 stipend, free on-campus housing, reimbursement for travel to/from the program, and funds to travel to a national or international conference upon completion of the program.
