Emotional Bases of Behavior Course this fall!
Dr. Thalia Goldstein is offering a new course this Fall which can count as a psychology general core course for all graduate programs.
"Emotion influences practically every aspect of human behavior and is studied (directly or indirectly) in all subfields of psychology. In this course, we will approach the topic of emotion from multiple viewpoints: behavioral, neurological, somatic, developmental, social, clinical, and cognitive. We will ask questions about how we define "emotion", how the social world affects the experience and expression of emotion, the development of emotion knowledge and regulation, and what happens when emotions become overwhelming or disregulated. We will use both a text book and readings of primary research literature, as well as historical, contemporary, and humanistic scholarship to approach this topic. "

Hi all, I wanted to let you know that I will be teaching a graduate Social Network Analysis class in the Spring of 2019.
In this class, I will cover the basics of social network analysis from theory to data collection and modeling for applied psychological researchers. I will focus on both cross-sectional approaches to describing social structures and network position as well as longitudinal approaches to modeling social network dynamics. So, we will explore various research questions that could be addressed using SNA. The modeling will be done in R, and I will provide user-friendly syntax and data. I am really excited to be offering this course at Mason!
Please let me know if you have any questions about the class or if you have any social networks-related questions or ideas that you’d like to discuss!
Best,
Olga Kornienko, Ph.D.

Submissions for the 2017 Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management Fall Research Conference are due April 5th!
Conference Theme
"Measurement Matters: Better Data for Better Decisions", Chicago, IL; November 2 - 4
The 2017 Fall Research Conference will focus on the importance of data and measurement, and celebrate the government staff who work to improve the measures we use every day. At recent Fall Research Conferences, we have heard about the importance of using evidence and research in policy making; focusing on data and measurement is the next step. It is more essential than ever, in light of recent criticism of government data and statistics, to demonstrate the importance of government data.
Policy Areas & Proposal Submissions
We hope that submissions will stress the importance of measurement in public policy analysis, discuss how data are used to evaluate policy and performance, and demonstrate how different data or measures affect results. We encourage submissions that examine new data (e.g., “Big data”), new uses for current survey data, and the integration of both survey and administrative data. Symposia and roundtables will present unique data sets that have been used to evaluate policy, the importance of federal data and federal measurement of key indicators, and the results of the recent effort on evidence-based policy making.
The 39th APPAM Fall Research Conference will take place in Chicago, a city that hosted the first APPAM conference in 1979. In a nod to the importance of state and local policy, we encourage submissions that examine data, measurement and analysis from states and cities, strengthening our connection to the local communities.
To address these issues, we are currently soliciting proposals for single papers, panels, roundtables, and posters until April 5, 2017. Submissions for the conference are now being accepted here.
More information about the 2017 APPAM Fall Research Conference, including the submission process and descriptions of the 15 policy areas, can be found here.

Types of Submissions
The 2017 Fall Research Conference will accept the following submission types:
- Panel - Panels include 3-4 papers. A chair and at least one, and a maximum of two discussants are required. Presenting authors may not serve as the chair or discussant on the same panel. Individuals may only present a paper on one panel throughout the conference, though they may serve as a chair or discussant multiple times.
- Single Paper - A proposal based on a single research paper. The papers will be scored on their own merit then grouped with similar papers to be presented in a panel format at the conference. The single paper listings will be available beginning February 13th.
- Roundtable - Roundtables are not paper dependent, but rather feature speakers who will discuss a topic from varying perspectives and draw the audience into a discussion on the topic. Roundtable proposals should include no more than 4 speakers plus a moderator.
- Poster - Poster submissions are single paper proposals that are presented in a poster format. Presenters will be asked to discuss their work and answer questions during each poster session. A first, second, and third pace winner will be selected from the presenters each day.

University of Virginia's annual L. Starling Reid Psychology Undergraduate Research Conference: April 21, 2017
The event highlights outstanding empirical research conducted by undergraduate scholars. Please encourage your strongest undergraduate researchers to apply.
The proposal deadline is Wednesday, March 15, 2017, at5:00pm and accepted applicants will be notified by Friday, March 24. Presentation formats are research talks (15 minutes) or posters. In recent years, the number of applications has exceeded conference capacity, so the selection process is competitive for both talks and posters. Though competition is stiffer for acceptance of a talk, applicants for talks are automatically considered for a poster if their talk application is unsuccessful.
The application is now live, and details are available at http://psychology.as.virginia.edu/reid-undergraduate-psychology-conference
