The National Institute of Education (NIE) in collaboration with Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore invites qualified individuals to apply for the position of Software Programmer at the Education and Cognitive Development Lab for an 18-month contract, pending funding.
Project Title: Technology-based tools for teaching early literacy skills Project Introduction: The overall project objective is to investigate cognitive mechanisms related to learning early literacy skills, and to apply findings expressly to educational interventions for struggling learners. The project includes a multimethod approach through two studies: The first uses a class of machine learning computational methods (neural networks) to examine models of learning sound-symbol correspondence for the deep orthography of English. The second applies findings from study 1 to the teaching of letter-sound correspondences using technology-based tools with primary-1 students in a learning support program (LSP). Study description: This position involves programming the computational models for study 1. The investigation includes running simulations with the models to simulate learning across different conditions, with varying input and model characteristics. Findings will contribute to our understanding of best methods for teaching early literacy skills to diverse learners. The study is headed by Dr. Beth O’Brien (ECD lab, NIE) and Dr. Luca Onnis (LEAP lab, NTU). Requirements Essential
